Bimal Das Gupta

born in Behrampur in 1917 and without doubts can be considered as the Father of Indian Abstractions.

In a time when India was breaking free from its shackles and newly independent, a movement called Bombay Progressives was formed, which was highly influenced by the west and consisted of artists like Raza, Souza, Ara, Gade, Tyeb, Gaitonde, Ram Kumar, Krishen Khanna etc. The idea of this movement was to leave the East Indian Artists behind and showcase themselves as a Modernist Avant Garde group away from nationalist art.

This did not deter Bimal Dasgupta and the master artist kept continuing at experimenting and coming out with works and blends beyond the known realms of art, techniques that would inspire many an artist to come. His adversity to Oil Paints made him develop blends and textures by the usage of other mediums which are today the basis for all Indian artists. It was his way to let people recognise him through merit over showy art and artists.
