RAM KUMAR

RAM KUMAR

Ram Kumar was a pioneering Indian artist and writer, celebrated as one of the foremost abstract painters in India. A key member of the Progressive Artists’ Group alongside luminaries such as M.F. Husain, Tyeb Mehta, and S.H. Raza, Kumar was among the earliest artists to break away from figurative art and embrace abstraction, a bold shift he shared with contemporaries like Bimal Das Gupta.

His works have achieved critical and commercial success both in India and internationally, with his masterpiece The Vagabond fetching a record-setting $1.1 million at Christie’s auction. Beyond his visual art, Kumar was also a distinguished writer, contributing richly to Indian modernist discourse. His multifaceted legacy as an innovator and thinker continues to inspire generations of artists and art enthusiasts worldwide.
