Commanding attention through a symphony of layered hues and gestural abstraction, this large-scale acrylic on paper by Ram Kumar is emblematic of the artist’s contemplative exploration of form, emotion, and spatial tension. The composition, rendered in a subdued yet richly nuanced palette of browns, beiges, blacks, whites, and touches of blue, immerses the viewer in a visual field that oscillates between landscape suggestion and pure abstraction.

Executed with energetic brushstrokes and areas of dense impasto, the surface bears witness to the physicality of the artist’s process. Textural contrasts, ranging from thick, almost sculptural applications of pigment to transparent washes and fluid, pour-like gestures, create a dynamic interplay that evokes both geological strata and emotional depth. The forms do not cohere into a literal representation but instead offer a spatial ambiguity that invites reflection and multiple interpretations. Ram Kumar’s signature abstraction resists narrative while evoking a meditative connection with the natural world. The overlapping planes and subtle chromatic transitions hint at a distant terrain or spiritual landscape, dissolving the boundaries between earth and sky, substance and void. The intermittent appearance of blue among the earthy tones suggests water or sky, offering glimpses of serenity amidst a composition otherwise marked by tension and compression.

The painting's compositional structure is underpinned by a sophisticated sense of rhythm and balance. The gestural marks convey both spontaneity and intentionality, revealing the artist’s deep engagement with the materiality of paint and the formal possibilities of abstraction. While rooted in a modernist idiom, Ram Kumar’s approach transcends stylistic categorization, drawing instead from an inner landscape shaped by solitude, memory, and metaphysical inquiry. The work contribute to its immersive quality, drawing the viewer into a space of quiet intensity. This abstract work functions as both a visual field and an emotive topography, an arena in which form, color, and texture coalesce into a unified, transcendent experience. This painting is a quintessential example of Ram Kumar’s legacy within Indian modernism, where abstraction becomes a means of spiritual and existential expression. The work stands as a powerful testament to the artist’s ability to harness the expressive potential of non-representational form while evoking profound emotional resonance.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
