Breaking Light, 2026
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 39.37 x 31.49 inches
Shanaka Kulathunga imagines the quiet wonder of dawn unfolding upon a fragment of earth still untouched by human presence. In this breathtaking landscape, nature exists in its purest and most unspoiled state — beneath an unpolluted sky filled with drifting clouds, surrounded by luminous greenery and tranquil ponds reflecting the first light of morning. The composition evokes a rare and almost sacred vision of serenity, inviting viewers into a world untouched by noise, haste, or the pressures of modern life.
Through expressive brushwork and atmospheric colour, Kulathunga creates an environment that feels both dreamlike and deeply real. The freshness of the landscape is heightened by radiant light filtering gently across the scene, illuminating the richness of the foliage and the stillness of the water. Every element within the composition appears interconnected and alive, conveying a profound sense of harmony between land, sky, and natural rhythm. The absence of human presence intensifies the emotional power of the work, allowing nature itself to become the central voice of the painting.
More than a visual representation of scenery, the work becomes a poetic refuge for the weary eyes and minds of contemporary city dwellers. Kulathunga offers viewers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and mentally transport themselves into this peaceful realm of silence and clarity. The landscape functions as both an escape and a meditation, reminding humanity of its forgotten connection with the natural world and the emotional healing found within untouched environments.
Through this luminous and contemplative composition, Shanaka Kulathunga transforms landscape painting into an emotional experience of stillness, longing, and renewal. His ability to capture the spiritual beauty of nature with sensitivity and depth creates a timeless visual sanctuary where tranquility, imagination, and the purity of the earth coexist in perfect harmony.

Why Choose Us
Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.
All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.
Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
