Radiating a serene and contemplative energy, this hand-tufted woolen rug by Bimal Das Gupta invites viewers into a nuanced interplay of light, shadow, and form. The composition centers on a striking visual dialogue between a luminous sun and the dark, imposing shapes of mountainous terrain, evoking a powerful sense of elemental tension and harmony. At the heart of this evocative scene, a solitary figure appears enveloped by the natural landscape, symbolizing an intimate embrace between humanity and the environment.
Das Gupta’s masterful use of texture through the medium of wool enhances the tactile and visual depth of the artwork. The rug’s surface conveys a rich layering of forms, where the rugged contours of mountains contrast with the smooth radiance of the sun, creating a dynamic balance that draws the eye across the composition. This textured approach not only highlights the physicality of the medium but also deepens the symbolic resonance, inviting reflection on the coexistence of light and darkness, presence and absence.
The central figure, rendered with subtlety and restraint, becomes a focal point of meditation and transcendence. Positioned amid the vastness of the natural elements, the figure suggests themes of solitude, introspection, and a spiritual connection to the cosmos. The composition’s symbolic layering encourages viewers to contemplate the universal human experience of seeking meaning within the rhythms of nature and the passage of time. Bimal Das Gupta’s work transcends conventional notions of textile art, merging craft with fine art to create a piece that functions both as a decorative object and a profound visual statement. The limited edition nature of the rug, being one of only nine, further emphasizes its uniqueness and the artist’s meticulous attention to detail and conceptual depth.
This artwork embodies a quiet yet powerful meditation on the interrelation of light, landscape, and the human spirit. It stands as a testament to Das Gupta’s ability to transform traditional materials into evocative expressions of philosophical and emotional inquiry. Through this rug, viewers are invited to experience a moment of stillness, where the elemental forces of nature and the enduring search for transcendence converge in harmonious balance.

Why Choose Us
Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.
All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
