In Living Carpet, Shanaka Kulathunga transforms a quiet pond into a richly atmospheric landscape filled with light, reflection, and organic rhythm. Inspired by the natural beauty surrounding Colombo, the painting captures the peaceful intimacy of a waterscape where nature unfolds gently and harmoniously. Through soft brushwork, layered textures, and luminous green tones, Shanaka creates an environment that feels both tranquil and alive, inviting viewers into a contemplative experience shaped by stillness and subtle movement.

The surface of the pond becomes the emotional center of the composition, reflecting light and surrounding foliage in fluid, almost dreamlike patterns. Floating lotus blooms drift across the water like delicate moments suspended in time, introducing a graceful rhythm that balances motion with calmness. These blossoms, often symbolic of purity, renewal, and spiritual awareness, add a meditative quality to the scene while reinforcing the painting’s connection to nature’s quiet cycles of growth and transformation.

Shanaka’s layered greens and expressive textures evoke the richness and humidity of Sri Lanka’s tropical landscape. Rather than depicting nature in a literal or highly detailed manner, the artist captures its emotional atmosphere — the feeling of silence, warmth, and immersion within a living environment. Light appears to filter gently across the water and vegetation, creating depth and subtle tonal variations that enhance the painting’s poetic mood.

In Living Carpet, Shanaka Kulathunga celebrates the silent vitality of the natural world, revealing beauty within its simplest forms. The work becomes an invitation to pause and reconnect with the restorative stillness of nature, where reflection, memory, and quiet life exist together in delicate harmony.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
