Shanaka Kulathunga explores the complex union of Lucifer, man, and angel as powerful symbols of human duality through this imaginative and psychologically charged series of works. Blending surreal creatures, musical elements, nature, and mythological imagery, the artist constructs dreamlike worlds where temptation, beauty, chaos, and spiritual awakening coexist in delicate tension. Each composition becomes a symbolic reflection of the human condition, revealing the constant struggle between darkness and innocence, desire and morality, destruction and transcendence.

Kulathunga’s expressive visual language transforms mythological and spiritual archetypes into emotionally layered narratives filled with mystery and introspection. The recurring figures appear both alluring and forbidding, embodying the contradictions that exist within human nature itself. Through dramatic gestures, fragmented forms, and atmospheric textures, the artist creates an unsettling yet poetic environment where viewers are invited to confront their own inner conflicts and emotional complexities. The presence of hybrid creatures, symbolic animals, and musical motifs further deepens the surreal atmosphere, suggesting the coexistence of harmony and chaos within the spiritual journey of humanity.

Rich colour palettes, fluid brushwork, and luminous contrasts enhance the psychological intensity of the series. Kulathunga masterfully balances abstraction with figurative storytelling, allowing the imagery to remain open to interpretation while maintaining strong emotional resonance. The angelic forms evoke purity and transcendence, while Luciferian references introduce themes of temptation, rebellion, and forbidden desire. Positioned between these opposing forces, the human figure emerges as fragile, searching, and profoundly vulnerable.

Through this compelling body of work, Shanaka Kulathunga creates a philosophical meditation on identity, morality, and spiritual transformation. His contemporary painterly approach redefines mythological symbolism with remarkable artistic sensitivity, offering viewers a haunting exploration of the fragile balance between light and darkness that shapes human existence.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
