Shanaka Kulathunga explores the complexity of human nature through a symbolic fusion of “Lucifer,” “man,” and “angel,” creating a striking meditation on the opposing forces that exist within every individual. The central figure becomes a vessel for contradiction, embodying temptation and innocence, desire and spirituality, darkness and transcendence simultaneously. Rather than presenting these identities as separate entities, Kulathunga merges them into a single psychological and emotional presence, suggesting that human existence is shaped by the constant negotiation between opposing instincts.
Surrounded by surreal organic forms, celestial textures, and cosmic energy, the figure appears suspended within an otherworldly realm where reality and imagination intertwine. These surrounding elements function as extensions of the inner self, visualizing emotional turbulence, spiritual awakening, and personal transformation. The composition evokes a dreamlike atmosphere in which the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical dissolve, allowing viewers to enter a deeply symbolic and introspective space.
Kulathunga’s expressive brushwork and layered surfaces intensify the emotional power of the work. Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
