In Luminous Chaos, Shanaka Kulathunga explores the sea as a powerful symbol of emotional turbulence, transformation, and inner energy. The painting presents the ocean not as a calm or predictable landscape, but as a living force filled with movement, tension, and radiance. Through sweeping brushstrokes and luminous tonal contrasts, Shanaka creates a composition that feels simultaneously explosive and meditative, capturing the unstable beauty of nature in motion.

The surface of the painting appears alive with rhythm and intensity. Layers of texture and energetic gestures evoke crashing waves, shifting light, and the restless pulse of the sea. Yet beneath this apparent disorder lies a carefully balanced structure, where motion and stillness coexist in subtle harmony. Shanaka transforms chaos into something contemplative, suggesting that even within turbulence there exists an underlying rhythm and sense of balance.

Light plays a central role in the emotional atmosphere of the work. Glowing highlights emerge through darker tonal passages, creating a visual tension between illumination and shadow. This contrast reflects the emotional dualities present within human experience — conflict and peace, uncertainty and clarity, destruction and renewal. The sea becomes more than a natural subject; it functions as a metaphor for the complexity of the inner world and the emotional currents that shape human life.

Rather than offering a literal depiction of the ocean, Shanaka invites viewers into an introspective space where nature mirrors psychological states. Luminous Chaos ultimately becomes a meditation on resilience and transformation, revealing how beauty can emerge from instability and how moments of calm can exist within emotional intensity.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
