Measuring Earth is a powerful exploration of the human figure, rendered through Jatin Das’s distinctive language of expressive abstraction. The composition presents two intertwined, elongated forms whose identities remain deliberately ambiguous, creating a sense of intimacy, movement, and psychological tension. One figure appears to bend protectively over the other, while the sweeping contours of their bodies establish a rhythmic dialogue across the canvas.
The work is dominated by earthy tones of ochre, burnt sienna, brown, and muted gold, set against a deep, dark background and a luminous pale expanse. These contrasting fields of colour intensify the sculptural presence of the figures, making their bodies appear simultaneously solid and dissolving. Das employs fluid outlines, layered brushwork, and areas of transparency to evoke both physicality and vulnerability.
The title, Measuring Earth, suggests a relationship between the human body and the larger material world. The figures seem rooted in the landscape-like surface of the painting, their forms becoming extensions of the earth itself. Rather than offering a literal narrative, the work communicates through gesture and sensation, exploring themes of human connection, touch, balance, and existence. Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
