This detailed painting by Monalisa Sarkar offers a compelling glimpse into rural life, likely situated within a South Asian cultural setting. The composition centers around a serene gathering beneath the protective shade of a large, sprawling tree, where several women and a man, dressed in traditional attire, come together in an intimate communal scene.

The women, characterized by their dark hair and intricately patterned garments, are portrayed in relaxed, natural poses that reflect a sense of ease and familiarity. One woman gently cradles a white bird, possibly a swan, symbolizing purity and grace, while another holds a circular, dark wooden object, likely a musical instrument or a container, adding a layer of cultural specificity and ritual significance to the scene. Another woman engages the viewer with the soft melody emanating from a stringed instrument, her fingers delicately plucking the strings. The man, centrally placed and wearing a turban, complements this musical tableau, seated and playing a similar stringed instrument, underscoring the importance of music as a social and spiritual connector in rural communities.

In the foreground, a white calf rests peacefully near the group, adding a further dimension of pastoral calm and grounding the scene in the rhythms of agrarian life. The animal’s presence amplifies the painting’s themes of harmony and coexistence between humans and nature. Sarkar’s style, reminiscent of traditional Indian folk art, is richly textured and meticulous in its attention to color and pattern. The vibrant hues and decorative motifs of the clothing contrast beautifully with the more stylized, almost abstracted, foliage and trees in the background. Light and shadow interplay skillfully across the canvas, creating depth and an atmospheric mood that envelops the figures, emphasizing their unity with the environment. Impression is one of tranquility, community, and cultural continuity, a vivid celebration of rural life that honors its beauty, simplicity, and enduring social bonds. Sarkar’s painting is a heartfelt homage to tradition, inviting viewers to appreciate the quiet richness of everyday moments in a shared cultural space.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more.
