Name:  Shape of the wind, 2026
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size:  44.5 x 56.5 in (113.03 × 143.51 cm)

In Shape of the Wind, Shanaka Kulathunga transforms the landscape into a powerful meditation on nature’s invisible forces and the emotional resonance they carry. At the center of the composition stands a solitary tree, bent and shaped by the force of the wind, becoming both a physical subject and a symbolic reflection of endurance, vulnerability, and adaptation. Through this striking imagery, Shanaka captures the presence of something unseen yet deeply felt — the silent energy that continuously shapes the natural world and human experience alike.

The sweeping brushstrokes and dramatic movement within the sky generate a strong sense of emotional intensity throughout the painting. Clouds appear to shift rapidly across the canvas, while the flowing contours of the landscape echo the direction and rhythm of the wind itself. Rather than portraying nature as static or peaceful, the artist reveals it as alive, restless, and constantly transforming. The tree, though visibly strained by the invisible force around it, remains rooted within the landscape, symbolizing resilience and the quiet strength found in endurance.

Shanaka’s expressive textures and layered tonal contrasts further heighten the atmospheric depth of the work. The interaction between light, shadow, and movement creates a poetic tension between fragility and persistence, reminding viewers of the impermanent nature of existence. At the same time, the painting conveys a profound sense of harmony, where all elements of the landscape appear connected through unseen energies and natural rhythms.

In Shape of the Wind, Shanaka Kulathunga invites contemplation on the relationship between humanity and nature, revealing how invisible forces — emotional, spiritual, and environmental — quietly shape the world around us.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
