In Stillwater Glade, Shanaka Kulathunga presents a tranquil and deeply poetic vision of the Sri Lankan landscape, inspired by the quiet natural beauty surrounding Colombo. Centered around a lotus-filled pond embraced by dense greenery, the painting captures a moment of stillness where nature unfolds gently and without interruption. Through this serene composition, Shanaka reflects his profound emotional connection to the land, transforming an ordinary scene into a meditative and emotionally resonant experience.

The calm surface of the water, scattered with blooming lotus flowers, becomes the heart of the composition, symbolizing purity, renewal, and inner peace. Surrounding foliage appears rich and alive, yet softened through atmospheric brushwork that creates a dreamlike sense of harmony. Shanaka’s layered textures and delicate tonal transitions allow light to move subtly across the landscape, evoking the warmth and humidity of the Sri Lankan countryside. The painting feels immersed in quietness, as though time itself has slowed within this secluded natural space.

Rather than focusing on dramatic scenery, the artist celebrates the understated beauty found in everyday landscapes. His expressive yet controlled brushwork gives the environment emotional depth, encouraging viewers to experience not only the visual richness of the setting but also its emotional atmosphere. The work becomes less about a specific location and more about a universal feeling of calm, memory, and connection with nature.

In Stillwater Glade, Shanaka Kulathunga invites contemplation and reflection, offering a gentle reminder of the restorative power of the natural world. The painting stands as a lyrical tribute to Sri Lanka’s lush landscapes and the quiet beauty that exists within moments of stillness.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
