Subroto Kundu’s Abstract Portrait of a Woman offers a compelling exploration of identity through the prism of abstraction and color. Employing a vibrant yet controlled palette of grays, blacks, whites, blues, reds, and subtle hints of yellow, the painting transcends traditional portraiture to reveal a fragmented yet resonant vision of the feminine form.

The composition presents a head-and-shoulders view, where the figure’s visage is deconstructed into an interplay of shapes and color fields. Rather than adhering to photorealism, Kundu opts for a modernist abstraction that challenges the viewer to engage with the portrait on a conceptual level. The face emerges not through precise details but via bold brushstrokes and geometric interlocking forms, which suggest contours, shadows, and expression through their juxtaposition.

The muted grays and blues dominate the representation of the figure’s garment, lending a sense of calm and depth, while a striking red accent on the head-dress injects vitality and draws the eye, creating a focal point within the composition. The use of contrasting colors—sharp blacks against soft whites, and cool blues against warm reds, further heightens the dynamic tension and visual rhythm throughout the work.

Kundu’s approach aligns with the broader tradition of abstract expressionism, where emotional resonance and formal experimentation take precedence over literal representation. This portrait invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of human identity, perception, and presence, conveyed through a synthesis of color, form, and texture rather than explicit narrative.

The textured surface, rendered in acrylic on canvas, offers a tactile quality that enhances the visual experience, revealing the artist’s deliberate hand and the physicality of the painting process. In Abstract Portrait of a Woman, Subroto Kundu masterfully balances abstraction and figuration, producing a work that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally evocative, resonating with contemporary explorations of self and representation in modern art.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
