Shanaka Kulathunga captures the vitality and emotional richness of urban street life through a composition filled with movement, texture, and atmospheric depth. Framed by an imposing architectural gateway, the bustling market scene unfolds as a vibrant theatre of everyday activity, where people, structures, and light merge into a unified rhythm of human experience. Rather than simply documenting a crowded public space, Shanaka transforms the setting into an evocative narrative that reflects memory, culture, and the shared pulse of community life.

The gateway serves as both a visual anchor and a symbolic threshold, drawing viewers into the heart of the composition while suggesting the passage between history and the present moment. Beneath its presence, the market comes alive with human interaction and layered activity. Passing figures, clustered stalls, and subtle gestures create a sense of continuous motion, capturing the warmth and spontaneity of daily encounters. Each detail contributes to the atmosphere of the scene, revealing the artist’s close observation of ordinary urban life and its emotional nuances.

Shanaka’s richly textured surfaces and luminous treatment of light give the painting remarkable depth and presence. Warm tonal variations move across the architecture and streets, illuminating the environment with a soft radiance that enhances both realism and emotion. His intricate detailing is balanced by expressive brushwork, allowing the work to feel immersive and alive rather than overly descriptive.

Through this layered urban narrative, Shanaka Kulathunga honours the collective memory and cultural rhythm embedded within public spaces. The painting becomes a celebration of human connection and resilience, revealing the enduring beauty and emotional significance hidden within the everyday life of the city.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
