Anurag Anand’s The Constants I is a subtle yet evocative monochromatic composition executed in acrylic, Conté, and ink on handmade paper. The work continues Anand’s meditative engagement with urban and symbolic forms, blending abstraction and figuration through a refined language of texture, line, and mood. With its restrained palette and layered technique, the artwork presents a hauntingly quiet cityscape populated by simplified human and avian figures.

The scene depicts an arrangement of buildings, rendered in muted tones of dark gray, black, and brown, against a soft, light beige background. These structures are not exacting in their realism; instead, they hover between abstraction and impressionism, suggested through fluid, expressive lines and tonal washes. Rooflines, window shapes, and architectural outlines are visible, yet loosely defined, giving the impression of structures emerging from memory or dream. The variation in line thickness, some bold and assertive, others delicate and broken, adds dynamism and spatial complexity to the overall composition.

Amidst these built forms, simplified human figures are positioned, subtly integrated into the scene. These figures are mere outlines, shadow-like presences that inhabit the architectural space without dominating it. They appear as spectral echoes of life, walking or pausing within the environment, contributing to the quietude and introspective quality of the piece. Their anonymity suggests universality, evoking themes of collective memory, solitude, and transience. One of the most striking elements in the artwork is a dark, solitary bird perched on a bare, arching tree branch near the upper part of the composition. The bird, rendered with more visual weight than the surrounding elements, introduces a poetic stillness and symbolic resonance, perhaps suggesting observation, freedom, or a moment of pause in time. A stylized tree, centrally positioned to the left, grounds the scene with an organic counterpoint to the geometric forms of the buildings.

Floating near the upper left is a pale, reddish-brown circle, most likely a stylized sun. Its soft, diffused color contrasts gently with the otherwise cool and muted tones, imbuing the work with a quiet warmth and hint of symbolism. The handmade paper’s texture is visible throughout, reinforcing the tactile quality of the drawing and adding another dimension of visual interest. The Constants I is both delicate and profound, capturing the essence of a place and the fleeting presences within it. Through minimalism and expressive mark-making, Anand evokes stillness, memory, and the unchanging rhythms of human experience.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
