In The Couple, artist Nawal Kishore offers a deeply introspective and emotionally resonant portrait that explores solitude, reflection, and human presence through a single, seated female figure. Though the title may suggest duality or partnership, the painting's strength lies in its subtle evocation of connection, perhaps internal, remembered, or spiritual, rather than literal depiction. The result is a compelling meditation on identity and emotional space.

The woman, likely of South Asian descent, is shown in a quiet, contemplative posture. Seated in three-quarter view and angled slightly to the right, her gaze is directed off-frame, inviting viewers to consider the unseen narrative beyond the canvas. Her expression is serene yet introspective, suggesting moments of inner dialogue, longing, or peaceful solitude. Rendered in a palette dominated by rich, earthy reds and muted browns, her form emanates warmth and quiet strength. The garments she wears, reminiscent of traditional South Asian attire, are painted with expressive brushwork that suggests intricate pattern and texture without rigid detail. The play of layered color and gesture brings her clothing to life, infusing the figure with dimensionality and grace.

The background is a striking crimson red, almost luminous in intensity. This saturated field not only enhances the emotional depth of the painting but also acts as a visual and symbolic counterpoint to the figure’s stillness. Along the right edge of the composition, a faint script or pattern emerges from the backdrop, subtle and almost hidden, lending an air of mystery and cultural memory. Whether text, textile, or symbolic motif, this detail adds layers of interpretation and anchors the painting in both time and tradition.

Kishore’s expressionistic style is defined by bold, visible brushstrokes that channel feeling as much as form. The surface vibrates with painterly energy, yet the overall composition maintains a balanced, meditative stillness. This juxtaposition of expressive technique and quiet emotion is a hallmark of the artist’s work, inviting viewers to engage both visually and emotionally. The Couple ultimately transcends its title, becoming a study in presence, memory, and introspection. Through the poised elegance of his subject and the richly textured canvas that surrounds her, Nawal Kishore captures a moment that is at once intimate and universal, a quiet homage to the inner life.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
