The flight of stillness, 2026
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 60 x 40 in (152.40 × 101.60 cm)
Shanaka Kulathunga captures a serene and contemplative moment in this poetic composition, where a woman stands gracefully surrounded by blooming water lilies as a white bird glides quietly beside her. The scene radiates stillness and emotional depth, evoking a sense of calm transcendence and spiritual connection with nature. Rather than presenting a simple portrait, Shanaka creates an atmosphere where the boundaries between the human figure and the natural world dissolve into harmony and quiet reflection.
The woman appears immersed not only within the landscape, but also within a state of inner peace and introspection. The surrounding water lilies, often symbolic of purity, renewal, and spiritual awakening, enhance the meditative quality of the painting. The white bird moving beside her introduces a feeling of freedom and gentle movement, acting almost as a silent companion or symbolic messenger within the tranquil environment. Together, these elements create a visual balance between stillness and motion, grounding the composition in both emotional sensitivity and natural grace.
Shanaka’s fluid brushstrokes and luminous color transitions bring the work to life with softness and atmosphere. Layers of glowing tones reflect across the water and surrounding forms, creating a dreamlike sense of depth and movement. His elegant portraiture captures subtle emotion with remarkable delicacy, allowing the figure to feel both intimate and timeless.
Beyond its visual beauty, the painting becomes a quiet meditation on emotional balance, serenity, and the restorative power of nature. Through expressive textures and poetic imagery, Shanaka transforms the canvas into a space of reflection where beauty, emotion, and tranquility coexist in perfect harmony.

Why Choose Us
Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.
All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.
Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
