An arresting portrait by Dhiraj Choudhary commands attention through its vibrant stylization and expressive use of color. The composition centers on a woman whose large, simplified visage is articulated through bold outlines and expansive flat planes of color, evoking an interplay between abstraction and figuration that is both compelling and evocative. The artist’s approach synthesizes elements of expressionism and folk art, creating a rich visual language that transcends mere representation to explore emotional depth and cultural identity.
The woman’s facial features, eyes, nose, and mouth, are rendered with a deliberate abstraction that emphasizes mood over naturalistic detail. Her gaze, subtly enigmatic, invites contemplation, while the prominent bindi on her forehead serves as a cultural marker, anchoring the figure within a specific symbolic and regional context. The yellow-blonde hair cascades fluidly down her neck and shoulders, its warm hues complementing the overall rich palette dominated by reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and muted browns. The subject’s attire is suggested rather than detailed, with a necklace-like ornament at the neckline portrayed through bold linear motifs and blocks of color, reinforcing the painting’s graphic sensibility. Surrounding the figure, the background is a dynamic tapestry of stylized floral and leaf patterns. These botanical elements, rendered with delicate, swirling lines and subtle gradations of color, create a vibrant yet harmonious environment that balances the solidity of the central figure with decorative intricacy.
Choudhary’s visible brushwork injects an energetic texture throughout the canvas, imbuing the piece with a sense of immediacy and vitality. This painterly quality enhances the expressive tenor of the work, while the interplay of warm hues envelops the subject in an aura of warmth and cultural resonance. The artist’s stylistic choices reflect a nuanced understanding of both traditional folk motifs and modernist abstraction, yielding a work that is deeply rooted in heritage yet dynamically contemporary. This portrait exemplifies a sophisticated dialogue between form and color, abstraction and symbolism, rendering an intimate yet universal meditation on identity, femininity, and artistic tradition. It stands as a testament to Dhiraj Choudhary’s capacity to merge expressive narrative with visual poise in a richly evocative manner.

Why Choose Us
Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.
All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
