A compelling fusion of abstraction and figuration characterizes this dynamic oil on canvas by artist Dhiraj Choudhary, where the evocative theme of music and feminine expression takes center stage. The painting presents two female figures, rendered with bold, graphic stylization, engaged in the act of playing the flute. Their interaction suggests not only musical collaboration but also a deep, unspoken communion, symbolically bridging sound and form.

Rendered in a rich palette dominated by deep reds, burnt oranges, and muted pinks, the figures exude warmth and emotional intensity. Their bodies and facial features are articulated with angular precision and expressive exaggeration, echoing both modernist abstraction and vernacular visual traditions. Choudhary’s signature use of bold outlines and flattened planes of color evokes a visual language that resonates with the aesthetics of Indian folk and narrative painting, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The compositional interplay between the two women is both lyrical and rhythmic. One figure turns gently to the right, her mouth aligned with the extended flute, while the other faces her with arms poised to receive the melody, an elegant embodiment of dialogic harmony. Their hands, abstracted into strong, sweeping gestures, become focal points, directing the viewer’s gaze along the invisible flow of sound between them.

Layered behind the figures, the background bursts with stylized flora, plants and flowers rendered in warm, earthy tones that echo the color of the figures while grounding the composition in a lush, organic environment. This floral tapestry not only serves a decorative function but also reinforces the thematic sense of natural harmony and vitality, paralleling the musical performance taking place in the foreground. Executed in oil, the surface of the painting reveals expressive brushwork and dynamic layering, which lend a palpable sense of motion and rhythm to the scene. Choudhary employs abstraction not to obscure, but to distill the essence of gesture, mood, and interaction, allowing viewers to engage with the emotional and symbolic resonance of the scene. This work distinctive ability to synthesize cultural motifs, expressive abstraction, and bold graphic design. It stands as a vibrant celebration of sound, sisterhood, and the timeless power of visual storytelling.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
