This large-scale abstract painting by Achuthan Kudallur showcases his distinctive visual language, one rooted in color, texture, and form rather than representation. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work exemplifies Kudallur’s mastery of layered abstraction and his sensitive use of color relationships to evoke emotional resonance. The composition is visually dense, dominated by a palette of earthy browns, warm oranges, deep reds, and bold blacks. These tones interlock and overlap in dynamic formations, giving the canvas a powerful sense of energy and depth. Broad sections of deep brown and black anchor the work, introducing weight and contrast that draw the viewer’s eye across the surface. These darker zones function almost architecturally, defining spatial boundaries while allowing the more vibrant tones, ochre, rust, and reddish-brown, to emerge and recede rhythmically.

Horizontal and vertical strokes in reddish-brown hues traverse the canvas, forming a loose grid or structure within the otherwise organic flow of shapes. These lines act as both compositional anchors and subtle visual dividers, guiding the viewer’s gaze without confining it. Their presence introduces a quiet order to an otherwise fluid and dynamic field. The paint application varies throughout the piece. In some areas, the surface is thick and tactile, with impasto brushstrokes adding a three-dimensional quality that enhances the materiality of the work. Elsewhere, thinner layers allow underlying hues to peek through, creating a sense of transparency and visual layering. Kudallur’s command of texture is evident in these contrasts, dense and open, opaque and luminous, all coexisting in a delicate balance.

Scattered across the painting are small dots and patches of yellowish-tan. These lighter, punctuated elements offer visual relief from the dominant earth tones, acting almost like moments of light flickering across the surface. Their placement appears spontaneous yet intentional, contributing to the sense of movement and visual rhythm. The overall effect is non-representational yet highly expressive. There are no identifiable figures or objects, only the interplay of abstract forms that evoke emotion, memory, or sensation. The painting resonates with the influence of abstract expressionism, yet remains deeply personal and rooted in Kudallur’s own intuitive response to material and color. Through this work, Achuthan Kudallur offers a contemplative and immersive visual experience, one that rewards close observation and invites introspective engagement with the pure elements of painting itself.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
