An intricate interplay of form and perspective defines this large oil on canvas by Bijon Choudhary, where Cubist principles are vividly reinterpreted through a distinctive artistic vision. The composition unfolds as a complex mosaic of overlapping figures and abstracted elements, inviting viewers into a layered narrative that transcends literal representation.

Central to the painting are two intertwined nude figures, rendered with a stylized abstraction that balances anatomical suggestion with formal simplification. Their muscular contours are articulated with deliberate lines and planar shifts rather than meticulous realism, emphasizing the sculptural quality of the human body. These figures recline on a reddish-brown surface, their intertwined posture evoking intimacy and dynamic tension simultaneously.

Surrounding and interwoven with the human forms are symbolic motifs that enrich the visual and conceptual texture of the work. A figurehead-like bust introduces a classical reference, while the stylized bull’s head and a bird inject elements of mythology and nature, each rendered with the same fragmented, geometric treatment characteristic of Cubism. These elements function as both narrative symbols and compositional devices, disrupting spatial continuity and encouraging the viewer to engage with the painting on multiple interpretive levels. The spatial organization embraces Cubist methodology through layered planes and fractured perspectives, producing a sense of depth that is both dynamic and disorienting. The interior setting becomes a constructed environment where conventional spatial logic is deconstructed, allowing multiple viewpoints and temporalities to coexist simultaneously.

Choudhary’s muted palette of grays, beiges, and browns is punctuated by subtle inflections of warm yellows and oranges, adding tonal variation and depth without overpowering the structural emphasis. This restrained chromatic scheme contributes to a contemplative mood, balancing the intellectual rigor of Cubist form with a surreal atmosphere. The painting exemplifies a sophisticated synthesis of classical motifs and avant-garde aesthetics, reflecting the artist’s engagement with art historical traditions while advancing a personal visual language. Through this work, Bijon Choudhary invites reflection on the complexities of human form, symbolism, and perception, challenging viewers to decipher the layered meanings embedded within a seemingly fragmented yet harmonious composition.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
