This compelling oil on canvas by Bijon Choudhary deftly interweaves representational figuration with abstract expression, resulting in a visually rich narrative tableau that invites multiple interpretations. The painting appears to evoke a historical or mythical scene, possibly drawn from Indian cultural memory, where symbolic gestures and visual motifs resonate with layered significance.

At the forefront, two figures astride horses command attention with their poised yet animated presence. Clad in light-colored garments, these riders are rendered with confident, bold outlines that emphasize their formality and stature, perhaps alluding to a ceremonial procession or a moment of martial significance. Their expressive features convey a quiet dignity and resolve, anchoring the composition’s human element amid a dynamic interplay of shapes and colors.

A third figure, distinguished by a laurel wreath and holding a rose, introduces a potent symbol of leadership, victory, or honor. This character’s placement and iconography suggest a commanding presence, perhaps a warrior or a revered leader, whose attributes are both classical and culturally nuanced. The laurel wreath, traditionally associated with triumph, alongside the delicate rose, balances strength and grace, adding depth to the painting’s narrative scope. The background presents a masterful fusion of abstraction and suggestion. A collage of geometric shapes, color fields, and fragmented forms evokes a landscape or eventful backdrop without literal depiction, thereby enhancing the composition’s visual complexity. This interplay between figurative and abstract elements generates a rhythmic tension, propelling the viewer’s eye across the canvas and inviting contemplation of the unfolding story.

Choudhary’s use of light and shadow is particularly noteworthy, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality that animates the scene. The strategic illumination highlights the figures’ contours and textures, while the diffused color transitions in the backdrop provide atmospheric resonance, reinforcing the painting’s emotive impact. The artist’s nuanced blending of traditional iconography with modernist abstraction reflects a sophisticated dialogue between history and contemporary artistic practice. This work stands as a testament to Bijon Choudhary’s ability to synthesize form, color, and symbolism into a cohesive, evocative whole. Through this painting, viewers are invited to engage with themes of leadership, movement, and cultural identity, experiencing a vibrant narrative that transcends time and place.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
