Masterfully navigates the realm of abstraction, presenting a richly layered composition that resists literal interpretation while evoking the atmospheric depth of a metaphysical landscape. Through a subdued palette dominated by muted grays, earthy greens, and tonal variations of yellow and ochre, the artist orchestrates a complex interplay of color, texture, and gesture. The surface of the painting is alive with painterly tension, areas of thick impasto paint application contrast with more fluid, blended zones, inviting viewers to experience a tactile reading of the canvas. In certain sections, the built-up textures recall geological strata or eroded surfaces, suggesting a subterranean dimension or a landscape shaped by time and elemental force. Elsewhere, subtle tonal shifts and luminous passages create spatial recessions and highlights, enhancing the illusion of light filtering through an undefined, ambient space.

Das Gupta implies shape and structure through suggestion. The absence of figuration or direct narrative does not signal a lack of meaning; instead, it enables an emotional and sensory engagement with the material. The canvas becomes a site for introspection, where color and form operate as emotional registers rather than descriptive tools. The abstract visual language employed here is not devoid of environmental or existential references. The organic palette, reminiscent of earth and mineral tones, evokes a sense of groundedness, while the fluctuating movement within the brushwork suggests both turbulence and calm, a dialectic that underpins the emotional core of the work. The lack of clear horizon or boundary further dissolves spatial certainty, reinforcing the painting’s immersive and meditative qualities.

Dilip Das Gupta’s abstraction finds resonance with the larger tradition of lyrical abstraction and Indian modernist painting, where the inner landscape and material exploration merge. His approach demonstrates a deep sensitivity to surface and a refined control of painterly vocabulary. The tension between solidity and fluidity, between presence and absence, becomes the very subject of the work. This piece does not offer a singular reading but instead opens itself to a multiplicity of interpretations, inviting viewers to contemplate texture, movement, and atmosphere as pathways to memory, perception, and emotion. In doing so, it affirms abstraction not as an absence of form, but as a rich and resonant space of becoming

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
