In this evocative oil painting, M. Shakeel renders a meticulously composed interior that seamlessly merges opulence, nostalgia, and narrative suggestion. Rich in period detail, the work invites viewers into a lavishly appointed room, where every element, from gilded moldings to velvet drapery, has been orchestrated to conjure a sense of cultivated grandeur. With its saturated palette, layered textures, and interplay of interior and exterior vistas, the painting functions as both a visual archive and an atmospheric meditation on memory and place.

The dominant hue of the interior, an enveloping deep green, anchors the composition with a sense of elegance and restraint. This verdant tone, bordered by elaborate gold trim and classical molding, is evocative of aristocratic interiors of the 19th century or colonial-era salons. A grand chandelier suspended from the ceiling casts a warm, amber glow, softening the scene and adding a sense of lived-in intimacy. Shakeel’s attention to material specificity is evident in his rendering of the richly upholstered furniture: armchairs and settees adorned in intricate fabrics of mustard yellow, crimson, and lapis blue. These sumptuous textiles are not merely decorative; they reinforce the historic character of the room, suggesting wealth, taste, and a reverence for craft. Tables and side tables, scattered throughout the space, further articulate the room’s functional elegance.

Anchoring the wall is a framed landscape painting, possibly of a mountainous terrain. This “painting within a painting” adds an additional layer of visual and conceptual depth, acting as both a compositional focal point and a metaphorical portal to a wider world. That thematic gesture is echoed in the large windows, from which one can glimpse a breathtaking natural expanse: tropical flora, distant mountains, and a body of water that seems to stretch into infinity. These exterior views soften the formality of the room and root the scene within a larger ecological and cultural landscape. Executed with controlled brushwork and tonal richness, Shakeel’s interior resists pure historicism. Instead, it conjures a dreamlike sensibility, a romanticized, perhaps imagined, space steeped in cultural memory. For a gallery audience, this painting exemplifies Shakeel’s ability to translate spatial complexity and tactile richness into a visual narrative that is at once intimate and expansive. It is a study in architectural elegance, personal history, and painterly devotion.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
