In Buddha Mosaic, M. Shakeel reimagines the spiritual calm of the Buddha through a vivid abstract idiom that draws from both modernist visual language and ancient iconographic traditions. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition presents a radiant figure of the Buddha composed of interlocking segments of color, rich golds, deep browns, vibrant reds, tranquil blues, and lush greens, suggestive of stained glass or a meticulously crafted mosaic. The segmented form does not fracture the figure’s presence but rather enhances its transcendental aura, creating a luminous, multifaceted surface that mirrors the layered nature of spiritual experience.

At the center of the painting is the Buddha’s face, rendered with serene precision. The closed eyes, calm expression, and balanced proportions evoke the classical canons of Buddhist sculpture, signifying inner stillness and meditative awareness. Shakeel captures not merely the physical likeness of the Buddha but his psychological and spiritual poise. The artist’s subtle treatment of the facial features and hands, resting in a gesture that hints at dhyana mudra or a prayer-like posture, underscores the introspective atmosphere of the piece. Surrounding the figure is a background suggestive of foliage or natural elements, executed with abstracted, organic forms that echo the stylized trees and landscapes of Buddhist mural traditions. This nod to nature places the Buddha within the archetypal context of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, reinforcing themes of harmony between human consciousness and the natural world.

Shakeel’s approach to form and color in Buddha Mosaic demonstrates a confluence of Eastern spirituality and Western abstraction. His palette, both warm and earthy, radiates a sense of sacred vitality. The stained-glass-like segmentation transforms the canvas into a symbolic vessel, where each colored panel functions like a window into inner clarity and layered meaning. The texture achieved through oil paint enhances the tactile presence of the work, making it resonate with visual and emotional depth. Shakeel's work enters a lineage of contemporary figurative abstraction that respects spiritual iconography while reinterpreting it through a personal and modern visual language. Buddha Mosaic is not a reproduction of religious imagery but a reinvention, an offering of contemplative space where traditional sanctity meets expressive innovation. It stands as a meditative tableau that invites stillness, introspection, and a renewed connection to the sacred in the everyday.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
