Artist: Achuthan Kudallur
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 10 × 11 inches (25.4 × 27.94 cm)

This abstract acrylic painting by Achuthan Kudallur presents a meticulously constructed gridded composition that commands attention through its rich and varied palette. Dominated by deep purples, dark blues, fiery reds, and vibrant oranges, the artwork creates a dynamic visual rhythm that balances intensity with subtlety. The grid structure serves as an organizing framework, allowing the colors and textures to interplay in a controlled yet expressive manner.

Throughout the canvas, sections of textured layering emerge, with areas of lighter tones—whites and soft creams—strategically interspersed among the deeper hues. This interplay of light and dark not only enhances the depth and dimensionality of the painting but also introduces moments of visual respite amidst the rich chromatic density. Kudallur’s brushwork is evident, with visible marks and strokes that reveal the artist’s process of layering, building up the surface through repeated applications of pigment. This tactile quality invites viewers to engage not just with color but also with the materiality of the paint itself. The painting eschews representational imagery, aligning with non-objective abstraction where color, form, and texture become the primary conveyors of mood and concept. The grid, while suggestive of structure and order, does not constrain the composition; rather, it facilitates a harmonious tension between repetition and variation. This tension evokes a complex emotional resonance, allowing viewers to explore their own interpretations and responses to the abstract forms.

Encased in an elegant gold or gilded frame, the work’s vibrant hues and layered textures are elevated, highlighting its presence and sophistication. The frame’s classic finish contrasts thoughtfully with the modern abstraction, bridging traditional art presentation with contemporary expression. Kudallur’s painting exemplifies a mature abstract language, where color and texture intertwine within a defined yet fluid grid, producing a composition that is both visually compelling and intellectually stimulating. It invites contemplation on the interplay between order and spontaneity, structure and freedom, ultimately offering a rich sensory and emotional experience for the viewer.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
