Artist: Madhav Satwalekar
Medium: Gouache on Board
Size: 15 × 21 inches (38.1 × 53.34 cm)

This captivating landscape by Madhav Satwalekar presents a tranquil village gateway scene, rendered with delicate precision and a muted, earthy palette that evokes a sense of timelessness. Painted in gouache on board, the work skillfully balances light and shadow to create a subtle yet immersive atmosphere that draws the viewer into a serene, rustic setting.

At the heart of the composition is a rough-hewn stone archway, a sturdy, timeworn structure that serves as both a literal and symbolic gateway into the village beyond. The archway’s textured surface and irregular stones are carefully detailed, suggesting the craftsmanship and endurance of traditional rural architecture. Flanking the arch are buildings rendered in warm browns, tans, and muted yellows, their simple forms hinting at a historical or pre-industrial era where life unfolds at a gentle pace.

In the foreground, a paved or dirt path leads the eye through the gateway, its surface dappled with soft shadows cast by the surrounding trees and buildings. This interplay of light and shade adds a tangible depth and three-dimensionality to the scene, enhancing the viewer’s sense of presence within the village. The large trees with lush foliage, positioned on either side and behind the arch, provide a natural canopy, further enriching the scene with a feeling of shelter and calm. A faint figure, possibly a woman clad in a light-colored garment, stands near the archway, almost blending into the landscape. Her subtle presence adds a human element without disrupting the quietude of the environment, suggesting daily life continuing peacefully amidst the village’s enduring structures. The figure’s indistinctness invites reflection on the intimate relationship between people and place, hinting at stories untold.

In the background, a gently elevated mound or hill rises, painted in soft, muted earth tones that harmonize with the foreground elements. This distant rise contributes to the overall composition’s balance and grounding, reinforcing the rural landscape’s expansive yet enclosed feel. Madhav Satwalekar’s use of a restrained color palette, dominated by warm earth tones, and the nuanced rendering of light and shadow reflect a deep appreciation for the subtleties of rural life. The painting captures not only the physicality of the village but also its quiet spirit, inviting viewers to pause and contemplate a world where time moves gently and nature and architecture coexist in harmonious stillness.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
