Artist: Krishen Khanna
Medium: Oil on Canvas Pasted on Board
Size: 38 × 11 inches (96.52 × 27.94 cm)

This evocative work by Krishen Khanna presents a female figure expressed through abstraction and emotion, balancing figuration with painterly freedom. The painting captures the subject in a dynamic pose, where movement and stillness appear to merge into a single moment of contemplation. Rendered in a palette dominated by gold, tan, and ochre, the canvas glows with a warmth that lends the work both earthiness and spirituality.

The figure’s form is built not through strict outlines but through layered brushstrokes, some sweeping, others sharp and textured, giving the body a sense of fluidity. The limbs and torso emerge gradually from the field of color, dissolving at the edges into the surrounding tones. This intentional lack of precise definition heightens the sense of movement, as if the figure is caught between gestures, alive with energy and transition.

The head is slightly turned to the side, its features only suggested, not described in detail. This ambiguity allows the face to transcend individuality, representing instead a universal image of meditation, vulnerability, and inner strength. The hands, raised in a gesture that suggests prayer or supplication, become the focal point of the composition. Their positioning evokes both surrender and devotion, creating a powerful visual metaphor for spiritual longing. The overall mood of the work lies at the intersection of the physical and the transcendental. The earthy tones ground the figure in material reality, while the gesture and movement propel it toward an intangible space of reflection and emotional resonance. The impasto and textural depth in the brushwork create a tactile surface that reinforces the painting’s visceral impact.

Within Krishen Khanna’s larger body of work, this piece reflects his enduring interest in the human condition—its struggles, faith, resilience, and quiet dignity. While many of Khanna’s paintings depict groups of figures, this singular female form stands apart, embodying solitude and introspection. The choice of warm, muted colors suggests both the sacred and the elemental, situating the figure within a timeless, spiritual continuum. The painting communicates not through detail but through suggestion, gesture, and color. It draws viewers into a space of empathy, allowing them to read their own emotions into the figure’s pose. In doing so, it highlights Khanna’s ability to merge personal expression with universal human themes, offering an image that is as much about inner states of being as it is about external form.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
