a striking example of the artist’s ability to merge figuration with abstraction, creating a work that resonates with both visual richness and emotional depth. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the painting presents a woman rendered in a highly stylized and fragmented manner. Rather than conforming to naturalistic representation, the artist emphasizes planes of color, texture, and rhythm, resulting in a composition that is layered and collage-like in its sensibility. The central female figure exudes a quiet, contemplative aura. Her relaxed pose and downward gaze convey introspection, yet her fragmented body and textured surface suggest complexity beneath the calm exterior. Santhanaraj does not pursue anatomical accuracy; instead, he abstracts the figure into overlapping patterns and chromatic contrasts. This approach allows the work to transcend portraiture, transforming the woman into an archetype of femininity, spirituality, and inner strength.

Color plays a pivotal role in establishing the painting’s mood. Shades of purple, green, blue, and yellow intermingle across the canvas, producing a dynamic yet harmonious palette. The juxtaposition of cool and warm hues creates visual tension while simultaneously enriching the surface with depth and energy. The incorporation of delicate floral motifs across the figure and surrounding space further enhances this vibrancy. These floral elements, small in scale yet intricate in detail, can be read as symbols of fertility, vitality, and beauty, anchoring the work within a broader cultural and symbolic framework. In the background, Santhanaraj introduces abstract shapes and patterns, culminating in a prominent celestial body, rendered in muted bluish-gray with speckles of light. Whether interpreted as a sun or a moon, this form lends the painting a cosmic dimension, situating the female figure within a larger universal order. The celestial presence resonates with themes of cycles, renewal, and timelessness, underscoring the interconnectedness of human existence and the cosmos.

The technique marked by layering, overlapping, and the interweaving of textures, suggests a visual language akin to collage. This method not only enriches the surface but also metaphorically reflects the complexity of identity, memory, and cultural inheritance. The work exemplifies Santhanaraj’s mastery in balancing abstraction with narrative undertones, creating a painting that is at once sensorially captivating and conceptually layered. Santhanaraj achieves more than a depiction of a figure; he constructs an immersive visual experience that celebrates color, pattern, and symbolism. The painting invites viewers to look beyond the literal and engage with the multiple registers of meaning embedded within its textures. It stands as a testament to the artist’s innovative approach and his capacity to transform the canvas into a meditative space of reflection and beauty.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
