Shyamal Dutta Ray’s evocative portrait immerses the viewer in a world of emotional depth and fragility. Rendered in his signature layered washes, the figure’s weathered face and delicate hand radiate introspection and quiet resilience. The muted palette, textured surface, and luminous undertones reveal the artist’s mastery in capturing the poetry of human vulnerability and lived experience.

This artwork reflects the profound emotional language that defines Shyamal Dutta Ray’s contribution to modern Indian art. A revered member of the Calcutta Painters group, Dutta Ray transformed the possibilities of watercolour, challenging its reputation as a light or decorative medium. Instead, he infused it with power, weight, and psychological intensity. His surfaces feel lived-in, marked by bruised colours, scraped textures, and layered strokes that seem to record the inner history of the human spirit.

In this portrait, the central figure emerges from shadow like a memory resurfacing. The weathered face carries the marks of time, every line, wash, and tonal shift suggesting a life shaped by reflection and endurance. The delicate hand, rendered with sensitivity and restraint, adds a quiet narrative to the composition: a gesture caught between tension and tenderness. The interplay between fragility and strength becomes the core of the artwork’s emotional resonance.

Dutta Ray’s muted palette, soft browns, greys, and diffused blues, heightens the quiet drama of the scene. Instead of bright colour, he uses tone and texture to evoke atmosphere and presence. Light does not illuminate; it breathes, emerging through the layered pigment like hope through struggle. The result is a portrait that feels both vulnerable and monumental in its honesty.

What makes Dutta Ray’s work so compelling is his ability to portray the unseen. His figures carry not just physical form but psychological depth. They represent histories, memories, and unspoken thoughts. In his hands, human fragility becomes a powerful artistic statement, a testament to endurance, identity, and the resilience of the soul.

This painting is a striking example of why Shyamal Dutta Ray is celebrated as one of India’s greatest watercolour artists. His art connects deeply with viewers, reminding us that even within stillness and silence, there exists a universe of feeling. Through this intimate portrait, he reveals how the simplest gesture and the quietest emotion can speak the loudest truths about what it means to live, remember, and endure.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
