Artist: Arpana Caur
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 24 x 36 in (61 x 91.4 cm)
Year: 2016

This painting by Arpana Caur, created in 2016, presents a dreamlike and introspective scene rendered in oil on canvas. The composition depicts a young woman peacefully resting with her head placed on her folded hands. Her eyes are closed, suggesting a moment of deep sleep, meditation, or inner reflection. Beneath her lies an open book whose pages curve gently, almost transforming into a soft, flowing surface that supports her body. The book appears to symbolize knowledge, memory, or imagination, indicating that the figure may be immersed in a world of thought, dreams, or learning.

The background is dark and minimal, creating a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. Above the resting figure, two large stylized eyes float in the darkness. These watchful eyes introduce a mysterious and symbolic element to the painting. They may represent awareness, divine observation, or the presence of a higher consciousness silently observing the dreamer. The dotted decorative details surrounding the eyes add a sense of rhythm and subtle ornamentation to the composition.

Caur’s use of bold yet harmonious colors, particularly the warm golden tones of the book, the soft pink of the figure’s skin, and the deep black background, creates a strong visual contrast while maintaining a calm emotional mood. The simplified forms and smooth contours of the figure reflect the artist’s characteristic style, blending elements of modern Indian painting with symbolic storytelling.

Overall, the artwork evokes themes of contemplation, knowledge, and the inner world of dreams. Through minimal elements and symbolic imagery, Arpana Caur invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between learning, imagination, and the silent presence of awareness that accompanies human thought.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
