Artist: Bijan Choudhury
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 39.5 x 50 in (100.3 x 127 cm)
Year: 1991

This painting by Bijan Choudhury, created in 1991, presents a powerful and emotionally layered scene rendered in oil on canvas. The composition features a reclining female figure resting on a simple bed in the foreground, her body positioned diagonally across the canvas. Her eyes are closed and her posture suggests deep sleep, exhaustion, or introspection. The artist depicts the figure with soft, sculptural forms and muted grey tones, giving the body a monumental presence while emphasizing stillness and vulnerability.

Behind the reclining figure sits a male figure, larger and more dominant in scale. His upright posture and calm yet stern expression create a striking contrast with the resting woman. Draped in cloth and positioned almost like a guardian or observer, he appears to watch over the scene. His raised hand gesture adds a symbolic dimension, suggesting authority, contemplation, or spiritual reflection.

The background environment includes architectural structures and simplified natural forms, such as trees and building shapes, rendered with subdued colors. These elements create a quiet but somewhat tense atmosphere. On the bedside table in the foreground, a small arrangement of everyday objects, such as a lamp, flowers, and a bowl, adds a domestic element to the composition, grounding the scene in an intimate, lived space.

Choudhury’s use of tonal contrast, simplified forms, and strong outlines reflects his distinctive modernist approach. The painting combines realism with symbolic narrative, inviting viewers to interpret the relationship between the two figures. Overall, the work evokes themes of protection, vulnerability, and psychological tension, encouraging reflection on human relationships, power dynamics, and the quiet moments of rest within everyday life.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
