Artist: Sujata Bajaj
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 39.5 x 39.5 inches
Year: 1989

In this evocative four-panel composition, Sujata Bajaj explores movement, fragmentation, and emotional intensity through an expressive visual language. Divided into quadrants, the painting unfolds like a sequence of fleeting moments, where forms appear and dissolve within a deep, earthy palette of browns, blacks, and muted whites. The fragmented structure encourages the viewer to move across the surface, piecing together the narrative suggested by shifting shapes and gestures.

In the upper panels, pale, almost spectral forms emerge from the dark background, suggesting the contours of a reclining or twisting figure. The brushwork is fluid and instinctive, with sweeping strokes and layered textures that create a sense of motion and instability. These forms appear suspended between presence and disappearance, as if captured in a transient state.

The lower panels continue this exploration with more abstracted gestures. A faint suggestion of limbs or a body seems to curl and fold into itself, while large areas of dark space dominate the composition. This contrast between form and void creates a contemplative tension, inviting viewers to reflect on what is revealed and what remains concealed.

Bajaj’s restrained colour palette and gestural technique emphasize mood over representation. The work evokes themes of memory, transformation, and the passage of time, where figures are not fully defined but rather felt through movement and atmosphere. Through fragmentation and abstraction, the artist transforms the human form into a poetic meditation on presence, absence, and emotional depth.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
