Abdulrahim Appabhai Almelkar’s Untitled (1977) is a richly detailed gouache composition that reflects the artist’s distinctive engagement with Indian miniature traditions, decorative design, and stylised figuration. The work presents an elegantly adorned woman in profile, seated within an intimate interior illuminated by the warm glow of several oil lamps. Her elongated form, poised gesture and finely modelled features convey a sense of quiet grace and contemplation.
The central figure is dressed in a luminous green garment embellished with delicate floral motifs, while a richly patterned orange-red drapery adds warmth and visual movement to the composition. Her elaborate jewellery—including necklaces, earrings, bangles and ornamental hair decorations—is rendered with remarkable precision, emphasising the decorative richness of the image.
Almelkar creates a striking contrast between the warm ochres and earthy tones of the figure and the deep, textured blue of the surrounding background. The repeated lamps introduce both visual rhythm and a symbolic atmosphere of illumination and serenity. Architectural elements frame the composition, lending it depth while retaining the flattened, ornamental quality characteristic of traditional Indian painting.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
