Artist: Dhiraj Choudhary
Medium: Mixed Media on Canvas
Size: 23.5 × 23.5 inches (59.69 × 59.69 cm)

This striking mixed media work by Dhiraj Choudhary presents a richly layered abstract composition that blurs the boundary between figure and environment, inviting viewers into a contemplative, almost mythical realm. Set against a light beige backdrop, the canvas is alive with intricate, interwoven lines and rhythmic forms that create a strong sense of movement and depth. The surface appears to breathe with organic energy, evoking dense vegetation, roots, and branches, suggesting a symbolic or primordial landscape where nature and humanity coalesce.

Amid this textured abstraction, several stylized female figures emerge, their presence both subtle and commanding. Depicted with simplified, mask-like faces and minimalistic detail, each figure nonetheless conveys a distinct emotional resonance. Their expressions, though rendered within the artist’s abstracted idiom, speak of introspection, resilience, and quiet strength. The figures appear at once embedded in and inseparable from their surroundings, reinforcing a visual and conceptual unity between the human and the natural.

Choudhary’s use of varying line thicknesses and tonal gradations adds dimensionality and tactile richness to the composition. Fine, thread-like lines coexist with bold, assertive strokes, producing a layered texture that invites closer observation. The large abstract shapes, suggestive of trees or foliage, are not merely background elements, they intertwine with the figures in a manner that dissolves the traditional figure-ground relationship. The visual interdependence of these elements conveys a philosophical undercurrent: that of human existence as fundamentally connected to the natural world.

There is a sense of timelessness to the scene, neither fully real nor entirely imagined. The composition suggests ritual, mythology, and memory, all compressed into a visual language that is at once personal and universal. The neutral background heightens this sense of dreamlike suspension, allowing the complexity of form and gesture to take center stage. It is a landscape of the inner world, rendered through the lens of symbolic abstraction. This piece is an evocative testament to his continued exploration of identity, myth, and the collective unconscious. Through this nuanced and layered canvas, Choudhary offers a quiet yet powerful meditation on the feminine presence, nature’s embrace, and the enduring pulse of life within abstraction.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
