Bimal Das Gupta’s Untitled (1981) is an evocative abstract composition that demonstrates the artist’s exploration of form, atmosphere and emotional depth. Executed in acrylic and charcoal on canvas, the work presents a mysterious landscape of biomorphic shapes emerging from a deep and luminous blue expanse.
The composition is structured around several floating and interconnected forms that appear simultaneously organic and geological. Rounded masses, shadowy silhouettes and translucent layers suggest rocks, clouds, figures or fragments of an imagined landscape, allowing the viewer to move freely between representation and abstraction. The use of charcoal introduces strong, gestural marks and areas of darkness, while acrylic creates luminous passages of colour and subtle tonal transitions.
A striking interplay of deep blue, green, black and radiant yellow defines the visual atmosphere. The glowing yellow areas appear like internal sources of light, illuminating the darker forms and creating a sense of mystery and transformation. The lower portion of the composition is dominated by undulating green forms, establishing a subtle spatial rhythm against the darker foreground.
Through layered textures, ambiguous forms and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, Das Gupta creates a contemplative visual experience. The painting reflects his ability to transform abstraction into a poetic language of atmosphere, memory and imagination.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
