Jayasri Burman’s Untitled (2001) is an enchanting mixed media on paper measuring 31.5 x 29.5 inches, immersing the viewer in a dreamlike, mythological realm where humanity, nature, and the divine coexist in perfect harmony. Heavily inspired by Indian folk art traditions and classical miniatures, the composition features four serene female figures with large, expressive eyes and graceful forms. Two women stand centrally, bound by an affectionate gesture, while a spotted deer rests gently at their feet. Flanking them are two more women embedded in the landscape—one crouching on the left near a waterbody, and another seated on the right tenderly cradling a bird.
The artwork thrives on rich symbolism and an abundance of stylized fauna. Radiant golden ducks float peacefully along the foreground stream and perch whimsically atop the women's heads, while a dense tree canopy behind them plays host to a flock of golden birds. Overlooking this pastoral paradise is a vibrant blue sky filled with patterned, scalloped clouds and a luminous full moon. Framed by an ornate, decorative border, Burman’s meticulous line work and vibrant palette of deep cerulean, terracotta, and warm ochre transform the paper into a lyrical celebration of feminine energy and the natural world.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
