Satish Gujral’s Untitled (2007) is a compelling oil on textured canvas measuring 24 x 24 inches, brilliantly showcasing the artist’s unique amalgamation of sculpture and painting. Throughout his illustrious career, Gujral consistently explored the tactile depth of his surfaces, and this piece thrives on a heavily granulated, sandstone-like texture that lends the entire composition a deeply archaic, relief-like quality. The artwork portrays a stylized human figure intertwined with animal and mechanical iconography, rendered in an earthy palette of warm ochres, deep browns, metallic silvers, and subtle terracotta reds.
On the upper left, a figure with a beautifully braided hairstyle leans forward in profile, their form sculpted with voluminous, volumetric curves that echo traditional Indian stone carvings. The figure interacts with an elaborate, interlocking system of harness-like straps, stirrups, and heavy metallic rings that curve dynamically across the canvas. To the right, the majestic head of a ram emerges with beautifully spiraled horns, its gaze fixed forward with stoic calm. A vibrant red horseshoe or stirrup near the bottom left breaks the monochromatic harmony, acting as a striking visual anchor. Through this intricate configuration of flesh, beast, and harness, Gujral masterfully captures an enduring theme of human struggle, connection, and rhythmic harmony.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
