Yusuf Arakkal’s 1996 untitled canvas showcases a powerful interplay of architectural abstract forms, tactile surface qualities, and a stark, brooding color palette. Encased within an off-white, paper-textured border marked with delicate grid lines, the central artwork feels like an artifact exposed within a frame.
The inner composition is dominated by a heavy charcoal-black grid that fragments the space into four distinct quadrants, evoking weathered window panes, urban facades, or industrial scaffolding. Rich textures define the surface; thick impasto and scraped paint create a distressed wall-like quality that speaks to memory and decay.
In the upper half, warm ochres and cream tones glow against deep darks, pierced by thin vertical openings reminiscent of narrow windows. The lower section shifts to cool metallic grays and muted whites, intersected by sharp diagonal lines and subtle, scribbled markings that resemble ancient graffiti etched into plaster. Touches of vibrant crimson red outline the inner perimeter, injecting a sudden, electric tension into the otherwise earthy, subdued palette of blacks, grays, and golds. Signed "Yusuf Arakkal 96" at the bottom left, the work balances geometric discipline with raw, emotive abstraction, capturing an enduring sense of urban solitude.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
