This 1997 untitled mixed media work on paper by Dhiraj Choudhury displays his characteristic kinetic line work, vibrant color layering, and expressive, humanistic style. The composition centers on a prominent female figure wearing a wide-brimmed sunhat, her hand raised thoughtfully near her face as her elongated, graceful arm reaches across the canvas toward a stylized yellow floral form.
To her left stands a second female figure shown in profile, rendered with long golden hair and sharp, stylized facial features. Choudhury’s energetic draftsmanship shines through rapid, gestural charcoal and pastel strokes that build a rich, atmospheric background of deep reds, ochres, muted blues, and charcoal shadows.
The interplay of pastel texture and fluid linework creates a sense of spontaneous, living motion throughout the paper. Sunlight appears to catch the bright yellow tones of the figures' hair, hat, and foreground botanical motifs, contrasting sharply against the darker, brooding background passages. Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
