This striking painting presents a solitary woman viewed from behind, standing beneath a large, yellow umbrella delicately patterned with soft, scattered motifs. Her dark hair is intricately braided, a subtle yet culturally resonant detail that connects the figure to traditional South Asian aesthetics. The woman’s attire, consisting of a dark gray or black blouse and a pale grayish-white lower garment, contrasts gently with her accessories: muted pinkish-red armlets or wristbands that add a subtle note of ornamentation.

The scene is set against a rich, deep crimson background that radiates warmth and emotional depth. Stylized, dark green-black foliage winds upward, forming a rhythmic, decorative pattern that frames the woman without overpowering her. Near the top right of the composition, a small green parrot perches lightly on the edge of the umbrella, a whimsical and symbolic presence often associated with companionship, nature, and communication in Indian art traditions.

A glowing yellow disc, representing the sun, appears just off-center in the upper background. Its placement and hue suggest a moment of transition, perhaps dusk or dawn, and enhance the contemplative mood of the piece. The flat, expansive background and vibrant palette work together to heighten the visual focus on the central figure while offering a dreamlike, narrative atmosphere. The painting’s overall style suggests a fusion of folk art influences and contemporary storytelling. The use of flattened perspective, decorative patterns, and vivid color fields creates a layered visual experience, rich in symbolism and cultural nuance. The artist’s choice of texture and tone implies a deeply personal or introspective moment, perhaps a pause in a journey or a quiet reflection beneath the open sky.

Through this composition, the artist evokes a powerful sense of solitude, tradition, and beauty, allowing the viewer to step into a poetic space where time appears momentarily suspended. Whether seen as a symbolic portrait or a scene of everyday grace, the artwork invites reflection on themes of identity, memory, and the delicate intersection of human presence and natural world.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
