Immersed in a radiant interplay of symbolism and color, Evening at Benaras by Manu Parekh offers a profound visual meditation on spirituality and transcendence. This acrylic on canvas composition centers around a commanding all-seeing eye, a timeless emblem of cosmic insight and omnipresent awareness. The eye functions as the spiritual nucleus of the painting, anchoring the layered imagery that unfolds around it and inviting the viewer into a contemplative engagement with themes of inner vision and universal consciousness.

Parekh’s use of luminous, ethereal hues bathes the entire tableau in a mystical glow, imbuing the work with a sense of sacredness and otherworldliness. Surrounding the central eye, tent-like structures and branching organic forms coalesce into a dynamic landscape that balances notions of shelter and growth. These shapes, both architectural and arboreal, evoke the interdependence of earthly refuge and spiritual expansion, reflecting the complex relationship between the material world and the intangible realm of the spirit.

The artist’s masterful layering of textures and subtle gradations of radiant color creates depth and movement, allowing the eye to travel across the canvas and discover new symbolic details at every glance. The nuanced interplay between light and shadow enhances the painting’s contemplative atmosphere, inviting viewers to reflect on the invisible connections that bind existence. Evening at Benaras resonates with Parekh’s enduring fascination with Banaras (Varanasi), a city renowned for its spiritual heritage and symbolic potency. Here, the city’s metaphysical essence is distilled into a vibrant visual language that transcends literal depiction, offering instead an evocative exploration of the sacred as a living, breathing force. The work embodies a synthesis of tradition and abstraction, merging cultural iconography with a contemporary sensibility.

This painting stands as a testament to Parekh’s ability to transform canvas into a space of ritual and reverence. It embodies the eternal dialogue between the seen and the unseen, the temporal and the eternal, inviting the viewer into a transcendent encounter with both place and spirit. Through Evening at Benaras, the artist conveys a universal message of interconnectedness and the enduring quest for enlightenment, making the artwork a luminous beacon within contemporary Indian art.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
