Shyamal Dutta Ray’s Visitor - I (1991) is a compelling oil on canvas measuring 29.25 x 29.5 inches, offering a profound meditation on time, heritage, and human contemplation. The composition establishes a powerful juxtaposition between the ancient past and the modern present. On the left side of the canvas, a towering, terracotta-hued relief sculpture of a classical Indian female deity or apsara dominates the space, echoing the sensuous elegance of historic temple architecture.
In stark contrast, the lower right corner features the profile of a modern man wearing glasses, representing the eponymous "visitor." Rendered in lighter, chalky gray and pale stone tones, his head is constructed with heavily textured, fractured facets that resemble weathered stone or cracked plaster. This stylistic treatment subtly blurs the line between the living observer and the inanimate monuments around him, suggesting how humans become spiritually intertwined with the history they seek to witness.
The artist employs a rich, earthy color palette dominated by deep umbers, sienna, and warm ochres, creating a somber, atmospheric space enveloped in shadow. Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
