Where the Lotus Blooms, 2026
Medium:  Oil on Canvas
Size: 55.11 x 39.37 inches

Shanaka Kulathunga evokes the atmospheric beauty of late nineteenth-century Impressionist plein air painting through his luminous portrayal of water lilies, reflective ponds, lush greenery, and radiant natural light. While the work recalls the visual sensitivity and observational richness associated with the European Impressionists, Kulathunga’s artistic vision remains deeply rooted in the tropical landscape and cultural spirit of his native Sri Lanka. Rather than merely echoing Western traditions, the artist transforms these familiar elements of nature into a distinctly personal and regional celebration of place, memory, and environment.

In this captivating landscape, Kulathunga deftly captures a fleeting snapshot of Sri Lanka’s breathtaking natural vistas with remarkable emotional sensitivity and painterly elegance. The tranquil pond covered with water lilies becomes more than a scenic subject; it transforms into a poetic meditation on stillness, light, and the harmony between humanity and nature. Rich tropical vegetation surrounds the composition with vibrant vitality, while shimmering reflections and atmospheric textures create a sense of movement and living presence throughout the canvas.

Kulathunga’s expressive brushwork and luminous palette infuse the landscape with warmth, immediacy, and sensory depth. The interplay of sunlight across water and foliage recalls the Impressionist fascination with changing light and transient moments, yet the emotional atmosphere of the work remains unmistakably Sri Lankan in spirit and mood. The dense greenery, humid atmosphere, and organic abundance reflect the unique ecological richness of the island, offering viewers an intimate encounter with its untamed beauty.

Through this evocative landscape, Shanaka Kulathunga celebrates the spiritual and emotional resonance of the natural world. His contemporary painterly approach bridges Impressionist influence with local identity, creating a visual language that honours both artistic tradition and the enduring beauty of Sri Lanka’s tropical environment.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
