Shahabuddin Ahmed (b. 1950) is one of Bangladesh's most celebrated contemporary painters, internationally recognised for his powerful figurative compositions that embody movement, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit. Born in Narsingdi, Bangladesh, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, before receiving a prestigious scholarship to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he trained from 1974 to 1981. His artistic vision was profoundly shaped by his experience as a platoon commander in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, an event that continues to inform the emotional intensity and psychological depth of his work.
Shahabuddin's paintings are instantly recognisable for their sweeping brushwork, expressive impasto, and dynamic figures suspended against expansive monochromatic backgrounds. While influenced by European modernism, particularly the expressive force of Francis Bacon, his visual language remains deeply rooted in the history, struggles, and cultural identity of Bangladesh. His monumental figures, often depicted in motion, transcend narratives of conflict to become universal symbols of courage, freedom, and human endurance.
Over a career spanning five decades, Shahabuddin has exhibited extensively across Europe, Asia, and the United States, with major solo exhibitions in Paris, Strasbourg, Kolkata, New Delhi, Dhaka, Barcelona, and beyond. His works are held in prominent public collections, including the Olympic Museum, Lausanne, Seoul Olympic Museum, Bangladesh National Museum, National Museum of Taiwan, and the Museum of Bourg-en-Bresse, France. His paintings have also been presented at leading international galleries and auction houses, including Christie's, Artcurial, and Drouot.
Among his many honours are the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2014), Bangladesh's Independence Day Award (2000), and multiple gold medals at prestigious international exhibitions in Paris. Today, Shahabuddin lives and works in Paris, where he continues to create works that stand as enduring testaments to the resilience of humanity and the transformative power of art.
