SUJATA BAJAJ

SUJATA BAJAJ

Sujata Bajaj (born 1958 in Jaipur) is a distinguished Indian painter whose artistic practice bridges traditional Indian visual culture with modern abstraction. Raised in a culturally rich environment, she grew up in a family deeply influenced by the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, values that subtly inform the spiritual and meditative undertones of her work.

Bajaj pursued her formal education in art in Pune before further refining her practice at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. This exposure to European modernism, combined with her deep engagement with Indian tribal and folk traditions, helped shape a distinctive visual language that blends symbolic forms, gestural marks, and vibrant colour fields. Since 1988, she has been based in Paris, where her artistic career expanded internationally.

Over the decades, Bajaj has exhibited extensively across India and abroad. Her early solo exhibitions were held at major Indian venues such as Jehangir Art Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, and the Academy of Fine Arts. Internationally, her works have been presented in galleries and institutions across Europe and the United States, including exhibitions in Paris, Frankfurt, Oslo, Brussels, and New York.

Bajaj’s paintings often evoke a sense of rhythm and spirituality, drawing inspiration from tribal motifs, calligraphic gestures, and symbolic imagery. Through bold colours and layered textures, she creates compositions that transcend representation and invite contemplation. Today, Sujata Bajaj is recognised as an important voice in contemporary Indian art, whose practice reflects a dialogue between heritage, modernity, and global artistic exchange.
