Artist: Sakti Burman
Medium: Watercolor on Paper
Size: 21 × 26 Inches (53.34 × 66.04 cm)

Sakti Burman’s Untitled is a delicate and evocative mixed media work that exemplifies the artist’s signature synthesis of abstraction and figuration. Executed with a refined interplay of watercolor and ink on paper, this piece offers a contemplative glimpse into a world where form dissolves into dreamlike suggestion, and narrative unfolds through poetic ambiguity.

At the heart of the composition are stylized figures, likely female, rendered with fluidity and grace. Their outlines, drawn in varied tones of brown, gray, and muted yellow, articulate forms that hover between representation and abstraction. These contours, combined with subtle washes of color that gently diffuse into the surrounding space, create an ethereal presence that seems both corporeal and spectral. The figures appear to float within the composition, evoking a sense of quiet introspection and spiritual transcendence. Complementing these forms is a circular, disc-like shape positioned to the right of the central figures. Painted in harmonious muted tones that mirror the palette of the figures, soft grays, browns, and gentle yellows, this element contributes a symbolic resonance to the work. The disc appears to hover, almost celestial in nature, inviting interpretations ranging from the lunar to the metaphysical, further heightening the painting’s enigmatic quality.

The background’s smooth expanse of light beige or cream provides a serene and neutral field, allowing the subtle color gradations and line work to emerge with clarity and delicacy. This simplicity of ground enhances the meditative atmosphere of the piece, emphasizing the quietude and intimacy of Burman’s vision. Burman’s masterful control of watercolor and ink is evident in the nuanced layering of translucent washes and the precision of line, imbuing the work with a delicate balance between control and spontaneity. The visible artist’s signature near the lower right edge serves as a quiet affirmation of the work’s crafted intimacy.

Untitled exemplifies Sakti Burman’s enduring exploration of poetic figuration and symbolic abstraction. Through a restrained palette and fluid forms, the artist crafts a visual language that transcends literal narrative, inviting the viewer into a realm of dream, memory, and quiet contemplation. This piece stands as a testament to Burman’s unique capacity to evoke profound emotional and spiritual resonance through minimalistic yet richly layered means.

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
