Artist: Shabir Hussain Santosh
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Pasted on Board
Size: 10 × 12 inches (25.4 × 30.48 cm)
With resonant intensity and formal elegance, this acrylic on canvas pasted on board by Shabir Hussain Santosh offers a compelling exploration of identity, form, and spatial abstraction. Enclosed in a tasteful frame, the composition centers on a stylized, dark-skinned female figure rendered in profile, her poised presence anchoring a dynamic interplay of form, gesture, and ambiguity. The woman’s silhouette, defined by subtle curvature and rhythmic brushwork, is enveloped within a matrix of other loosely defined figures. These surrounding presences emerge and recede into a shifting backdrop of ochre, sienna, and deep earthen tones. The suggestion of movement and interaction is palpable, though never fully disclosed, imbuing the scene with a quiet psychological tension.
Santosh employs abstraction not as an escape from figuration, but as a philosophical gesture. The forms within the canvas merge and overlap, creating a spatial continuum that draws no firm boundary between subject and environment. The background, composed of overlapping geometric segments and softened angles, suggests an interior setting, perhaps symbolic, perhaps domestic, yet remains intentionally open to interpretation.
The central figure exudes dignity and introspection. Her profile, while simplified, is monumental in its presence. This figure, like much of Santosh’s work, is archetypal, a representation not of a specific person but of a universal human state. The tonal palette, dominated by muted golds and deep browns, evokes a sense of warmth and rootedness, while the textured application of paint adds a tactile richness to the surface. Rooted in the traditions of South Asian modernism and deeply influenced by metaphysical inquiry, Santosh’s work transcends visual aesthetics to occupy a space of introspective resonance. This painting, in particular, reflects his ongoing engagement with the themes of inner identity, collective memory, and the fluid boundary between the physical and the metaphysical.
In this evocative composition, Santosh constructs not merely an image, but an atmosphere, inviting the viewer into a contemplative dialogue where meaning unfolds slowly, in rhythm with one’s gaze.

Why Choose Us
Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.
All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
