Exuding quiet dignity and introspective grace, this portrait by Suhas Roy employs a refined mixed media approach on canvas to render a woman of profound presence and cultural resonance. The artist’s sensitive layering of pigments and textures creates a nuanced surface that invites close engagement, revealing a masterful balance between subtlety and emotional depth.

The sitter’s warm, reddish-brown complexion is articulated with delicate gradations that emphasize the vitality and naturalism of her skin tone. Dark hair cascades softly around her shoulders, where muted purple blossoms, suggestive rather than overt, intertwine with the strands, lending the composition a poetic and almost ethereal quality. These floral accents enrich the portrait’s symbolism, evoking themes of femininity, nature, and quiet beauty.

Her gaze, directed slightly off-center, conveys serene contemplation, inviting the viewer into a moment of intimate reflection. The eyes, rendered in deep brown hues with a whisper of subtle eyeshadow, are a focal point of expressive calm. Complementing this, her lips, tinted a gentle rosy-red, enhance the harmonious color scheme while emphasizing the sitter’s softness and warmth.

The subject’s garment features muted dark-green leaf motifs, carefully integrated into the composition through delicate brushwork and layering techniques. This naturalistic patterning echoes the floral elements in her hair and suggests a connection between the sitter and the organic world, reinforcing a theme of unity with nature often found in South Asian artistic traditions. Set against a rich, deep reddish-orange background, the portrait is imbued with a vibrant warmth that contrasts yet complements the coolness of the greens and purples. This chromatic interplay heightens the visual tension and enriches the overall emotional impact, drawing attention to the sitter while enveloping her in an aura of vitality and cultural specificity.

Suhas Roy’s stylistic approach resonates with Indian and South Asian artistic legacies, seamlessly integrating traditional iconography with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. The textural complexity and layered application of pigments reflect an artist deeply attuned to the subtleties of human presence and the evocative power of color and form. Through this compelling portrait, Roy invites a meditative engagement with themes of identity, beauty, and cultural heritage, offering viewers a profound experience of quiet strength and poetic resonance

Why Choose Us

Art has always, naturally, reflected the development and exploration of different thoughts and perceptions, and our current postmodern era is no different. It is interesting to see how art has evolved visually, yet the traditional methods of composing art remain a valid means of expression.

All it takes for an artist to rise above normalcy, is inspiration, which fuels his passion to paint beautiful creations throughout his life.
The valuable expression of art is always there with us, but now this expression is yet to take an interesting diversion with our art gallery, Gallery Silver Scapes, located in Hauz Khas Enclave. Art is no longer considered just decorative but has evolved and come forth as a major form of investment yielding high rates of returns for its buyers, making it an expression commonly used.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.

Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
